Frequently Asked Questions
How ByeByeApply works, who it's for, and why we do it this way.
Product & who it's for
What is ByeByeApply?
ByeByeApply is a career platform built around your portfolio, not your CV. You build a forward-looking portfolio about what you want to do next and how you work best, follow companies that feel like the right fit, and get discovered without bias. Companies can browse candidates anonymously via ByeByeBias and reach out when there's a match. We focus on Norway.
Who is ByeByeApply for?
Two main audiences: career-curious professionals who want to own their career and design what's next (our main homepage), and people who are actively looking for a job right now (our jobseekers page). Both use the same platform — browse companies, build your portfolio, and connect. Companies use the B2B side to discover motivated, pre-qualified talent.
How is ByeByeApply different from LinkedIn or job boards?
LinkedIn and job boards are backward-looking: they focus on your history, job titles, and where you've been. ByeByeApply is forward-looking: what you want to do next, what you're great at, and how you work. Your portfolio is anonymous — no name, photo, or timeline — so matching happens on fit and contribution, not on bias. Companies browse without seeing who you are until you choose to connect.
What is the difference between a portfolio and a CV?
A CV is a record of the past — job titles, employers, dates, education. A portfolio is a statement about the future — what you want to work on, how you operate, what makes you effective. Your ByeByeApply portfolio has no work history. It shows your superpower, how you work best, your unique angle, and what you're looking for. Companies reading it learn whether you'd be a great fit for what's next — not just what you've done before.
How it works
How does the platform work?
In four steps: (1) Discover — browse 2,100+ companies open to direct applications and follow at least 5 that feel like the right fit. (2) Build your portfolio — a short AI-coached conversation creates your anonymous portfolio (superpower, how you work, your unique angle, what you're looking for). (3) Share & connect — share your portfolio link or set it to public so companies can find you. (4) Get discovered — companies browse candidates via ByeByeBias, an anonymous search tool. They see your portfolio without knowing who you are and can request to connect.
Why do I need to follow at least 5 companies?
Following companies teaches the platform what kind of place you belong at — industry, size, culture, location. We call this Company DNA. It's revealed preference, which is more reliable than questionnaires. You need to follow at least 5 before you can publish your portfolio so that matching is meaningful.
What is my portfolio and who can see it?
Your portfolio is a short, forward-looking page: your superpower, how you work best, your unique angle, and what you're looking for. It does not show your name, photo, age, or work history. You control visibility with three settings: Public (discoverable via search engines and ByeByeBias), Shared (only people with the direct link), or Private (only you). You also have a separate toggle to control whether you appear in the ByeByeBias anonymous company browse.
Can I still contact companies directly without an account?
Yes. The company browse page (/companies) is publicly accessible — no account needed. Anyone can browse 2,100+ Norwegian companies that welcome direct applications (åpen søknad) and send their own message. An account gives you tools: AI message generation, follow-up reminders, activity tracking, and a portfolio for companies to discover you.
ByeByeBias — anonymous candidate discovery
What is ByeByeBias?
ByeByeBias is the anonymous browse layer for companies. Companies search and filter candidates by skills, preferred tasks, industries, and locations — without seeing names, photos, ages, or any identifying information. Only when a candidate chooses to respond to a connection request does their identity become visible. It's how we make the first stage of hiring compliant by design.
How do I control whether I appear in ByeByeBias?
Use the 'Visible to companies' toggle in your portfolio settings. It's opt-in — you are not visible by default unless you enable it. You can turn it off at any time. Enabling it doesn't reveal your identity; companies still only see your anonymous portfolio. Your name and contact details stay hidden until you choose to respond to a connection request.
If my portfolio is public, can someone find me via Google and break my anonymity in ByeByeBias?
No — we prevent this by design. If you enable the 'Visible to companies' toggle, your portfolio page is automatically excluded from search engine indexing, even if your portfolio is set to Public. This ensures that a company browsing ByeByeBias cannot re-identify you by searching for your profile text online. If you turn off company search visibility, your public portfolio can be indexed normally.
Is ByeByeBias compliant with GDPR and hiring regulations?
Yes. ByeByeBias is designed from the ground up to reduce structured bias and meet privacy obligations. No AI scoring or algorithmic ranking is applied — results are sorted by last-updated date only. This means there is no automated decision-making requiring transparency under GDPR or the EU AI Act. Candidates opt in explicitly, and companies never see identifying information unless the candidate chooses to share it.
Bias-free & anonymous
Why is my portfolio anonymous?
So matching is unbiased. Names, photos, and timelines can trigger unconscious bias. We strip those away so companies see only what matters: what you want to do, what you're great at, and how you work. You decide when to reveal your identity — for example when you reply to a connection request.
What do companies see (and not see) about me?
They see: your superpower, the tasks and problems you like solving, how you work best, what you're looking for in a company, your skills, preferred industries, and locations. They do not see: your name, photo, age, work history, education, employer names, or career gaps.
Does AI write my portfolio — and can it introduce bias?
Your portfolio starts with an AI coaching conversation that asks about what you want to do next, how you work best, and what makes you unique. The AI generates a first draft based on your answers. We've instructed it not to include names, age, school names, employer names, or demographic markers. You can edit everything after — and for the text shown in company browsing, we run an automatic filter to remove any identifying information that may have been added manually. Your full text stays intact on your own portfolio page.
Can I trust that companies won't figure out who I am from my text?
We remove known bias signals automatically before your text is shown in company browsing — age indicators, school names, employer names, and similar patterns. No automated system catches everything, so the safest approach is to write about what you can do and how you work, rather than where you did it. Your portfolio settings page shows a tip with the same guidance while you write.
Company DNA
What is Company DNA?
Company DNA is what we learn from the companies you follow. If you follow 5 startups and 2 scale-ups in Oslo, we infer that you prefer small to mid-size, impact-focused companies in that location. We don't ask you to describe your ideal company in the abstract — we see it from your choices. More follows mean sharper DNA and better matching.
How is Company DNA used for matching?
When we recommend companies to you, we use your existing follows. When companies look for talent via ByeByeBias, they can find people whose Company DNA fits — for example people who already follow similar companies to theirs. It helps both sides find better fits than keyword or title matching.
For companies
How can companies use ByeByeApply?
Companies that join get access to ByeByeBias — an anonymous candidate browse tool. They can search and filter candidates by skills, tasks, preferred industries, and locations without seeing names or identifying details. They can also see who's already following their company — people who have shown direct interest. When they find a match, they send a connection request; the candidate gets an email and decides whether to respond and reveal their identity.
What is ByeByeBias and how does it help companies hire fairly?
ByeByeBias is a search and filter tool for candidates — no AI scoring, no ranking, no profiling. Results are sorted by last-updated date only. This means the tool is inherently compliant with GDPR automated decision-making restrictions and the EU AI Act's rules on high-risk AI in hiring. Companies discover motivated, pre-qualified talent based on what candidates want to do and how they work — not who they appear to be on paper.
What does 'who's following us' mean for companies?
It means you can see how many people have added your company to their list and what kind of work they want to do. You see anonymous portfolios so you can reach out to people who fit what you need. These are warm leads — people who chose you before you even knew they existed.
How do connection requests work?
When a company wants to connect with a candidate, they send a connection request through the platform. The candidate receives an email notification — but the company never sees the candidate's email address. The candidate chooses whether to respond and share their identity. The company never gains access to personal data unless the candidate consents.
Why we built it this way
Why is outreach a message, not a job application?
By design. When you reach out to a company through ByeByeApply, you are sending a personal email or LinkedIn message — the same kind of direct contact you would make on your own. There is no application form, no ATS submission, no rejection button, and no formal hiring process mediated by the platform. The company receives your message like any other email. This is intentional: we believe the best career conversations start as human-to-human contact, not as applications in a queue. It also means there is no 'AI in hiring decisions' dynamic — the platform helps you write a good message; what happens next is entirely between you and the person you contacted.
Why is there no AI scoring or ranking anywhere on the platform?
Because we don't think AI should decide who gets seen first. ByeByeBias — our anonymous candidate browse tool for companies — is a database filter, not an AI system. Companies search by skills, tasks, preferred industries, and locations using filters you set yourself. Results are sorted by last-updated date only. No match scores. No fit percentages. No algorithmic ranking. This keeps the tool simple, transparent, and free from the bias that scoring systems can introduce. It also means the tool sits clearly outside the high-risk AI category under the EU AI Act, since there is no automated decision-making involved.
Does AI make any decisions about candidates or companies on this platform?
No. AI on ByeByeApply has one role: to help candidates express themselves. The AI coaching conversation during onboarding helps you find the right words for what you want to do next and how you work. The AI message generator helps you draft a personal outreach message — like having a writing assistant before you send an email. AI does not rank candidates, filter results for companies, score fit, or influence who gets discovered. All decisions — who to contact, who to respond to — are made by humans.
What does 'compliant by design' actually mean?
It means we made deliberate architectural choices to avoid regulatory risk, not just legal checkbox work. No AI scoring = no automated decision-making requiring GDPR transparency. No formal applications = outside the scope of recruitment AI regulation. Opt-in anonymity = candidates control their own exposure. Bias-free text = AI-generated content strips demographic signals before companies see it. These aren't features we added to comply — they are how the product works.
Practical
Is ByeByeApply only for Norway?
Yes. Our company database and focus are on Norwegian companies. The platform supports both Norwegian and English speakers in Norway, including expats moving to Norway for work.
